Water Treatment Plant 2.2 is one of five industrial water treatment plants we delivered in Qatar. The plant was commissioned and brought into service from December 2019, protected by a pre-engineered steel shelter, and operated under full O&M through to handover in 2021.

Project scope (EPC)

  • Engineering & design of the treatment process together with the civil and structural works.
  • Procurement & construction of the plant and a pre-engineered steel weather-protection building over the process equipment.
  • Commissioning & start-up from December 2019, with performance testing against the treated-water specification.
  • Operations & maintenance covering staffing, laboratory testing, consumables, sludge handling, and power supply through to handover.

Design & process

The plant treats groundwater drainage from a dewatering process, reducing the pollutant load before controlled discharge. It is designed for a hydraulic load of up to 6,000 m³/day (70 l/s). Designed for an inlet load of up to TSS 1,000 mg/l, the treatment train delivers a treated-water specification of TSS ≤10 mg/l, oil & grease ≤0.5 mg/l, BOD₅ ≤10 mg/l, COD ≤20 mg/l, E. coli ≤2.3 MPN/100 ml, and pH held between 6.5 and 7.5.

  • Sedimentation and clarification

  • Activated carbon adsorption
  • Manganese and iron (Mn/Fe) reduction
  • Sludge thickening and removal
  • Independent diesel power generation with standby redundancy
  • Pre-engineered steel weather-protection building (multi-span, designed to international steel codes)

Construction & commissioning timeline

  • Commissioning and start-up from December 2019.
  • Construction and installation of a pre-engineered steel weather-protection shelter (October–November 2020) to protect the plant and equipment from UV and rain.
  • Continuous O&M maintained through to project handover in 2021.

Quality & HSE

Delivery was governed by our QA/QC approach — inspection, testing, and documentation against the treated-water specification — and by HSE management covering site safety, environmental control, and regulatory compliance. Laboratory testing and monthly operating reports tracked performance throughout the operations period.

Engineering challenges solved

  • Commissioning the plant to its treated-water specification and stabilising performance from start-up.
  • Designing and erecting a multi-span pre-engineered steel shelter over an operating plant to shield equipment from the climate.
  • Maintaining treated-water quality against a variable inlet load through controlled dosing.
  • Coordinating fabrication, delivery, and installation of the steel structure on a live site.

Operations and maintenance were provided by SGS through to handover in 2021. The plant is no longer under our O&M; the experience, systems, and standards demonstrated here are directly transferable to our solar PV and civil infrastructure delivery.
