Water Treatment Plant 2.1
Full EPC delivery and O&M of an industrial water treatment plant in Qatar, handed over in 2021.
Water Treatment Plant 2.1 is one of five industrial water treatment plants we delivered in Qatar. We engineered, built, commissioned, and operated the plant to treat groundwater drainage ahead of controlled discharge, with O&M provided through to handover in 2021.
Project scope (EPC)
- Engineering & design of the treatment process and supporting civil, mechanical, and electrical works.
- Procurement & construction including new reinforced-concrete slabs for the multimedia filters and installation of the filtration and dosing systems.
- Commissioning and verification of treated-water performance.
- Operations & maintenance with on-site manpower, laboratory testing, consumables, sludge removal, and power generation through to handover.
Design & process
The plant treats groundwater drainage from a dewatering process, reducing the pollutant load before controlled discharge. It is designed for a hydraulic load of up to 6,000 m³/day (70 l/s). Designed for an inlet load of up to TSS 1,000 mg/l, the treatment train delivers a treated-water specification of TSS ≤10 mg/l, oil & grease ≤0.5 mg/l, BOD₅ ≤10 mg/l, COD ≤20 mg/l, E. coli ≤2.3 MPN/100 ml, and pH held between 6.5 and 7.5.

Construction & commissioning timeline
- Among the earliest of the plants to enter operation within its cluster.
- Construction of new concrete slabs and installation of additional multimedia filtration capacity.
- Continuous O&M maintained through to project handover in 2021.
Quality & HSE
Delivery was governed by our QA/QC approach — inspection, testing, and documentation against the treated-water specification — and by HSE management covering site safety, environmental control, and regulatory compliance. Laboratory testing and monthly operating reports tracked performance throughout the operations period.
Engineering challenges solved
- Constructing and tying in new filtration capacity, including the reinforced-concrete slabs, alongside an operating plant.
- Managing a shared standby generator across the cluster to maintain power availability.
- Holding effluent quality against inlet variability up to TSS 1,000 mg/l.
- Sustaining consumable and media supply chains to the Qatar site.
Operations and maintenance were provided by SGS through to handover in 2021. The plant is no longer under our O&M; the experience, systems, and standards demonstrated here are directly transferable to our solar PV and civil infrastructure delivery.
